Sensory Experiences

Theoretical Basis

When a person arrives for a medical procedure, the body is often already in a state of heightened physiological arousal.

Even before the procedure begins, heart rate increases, breathing patterns change, and muscles become tense.

This is a natural physiological response to situations perceived as threatening or uncertain.

How Can We Influence This Process?

Our nervous system is highly responsive to environmental stimuli.

Slow, continuous, and repetitive visual movement may help reduce physiological arousal.

Natural visual environments, calming colors, and environmental cues can help shift the nervous system toward a calmer state.

When people are exposed to calm sensory environments with a slow and steady pace- without rapid changes, without decision-making demands, and without cognitive overload- the body does not need to remain in a constant state of alertness.

As a result, the transition from heightened physiological arousal to a calmer state may occur more efficiently.

What Does the Research Show?

Studies in psychophysiology suggest that the visual environment and its design can influence nervous system activity.

Research has shown that when continuous cognitive processing is reduced, the body may return more quickly to a calmer physiological state.

EEG studies have also demonstrated higher alpha-wave activity during states of relaxation compared with moments of acute alertness.

In simple terms, when the environment no longer signals that the body must remain on high alert, physiological arousal can naturally decrease.

VR-TheraFix is not designed to calm users through persuasion or verbal guidance. Instead, it is designed to support physiological regulation through carefully selected environmental elements, including visual composition, a sense of containment, reduced cognitive load, and gradual attentional guidance.

Its approach relies on the design of the environment itself-not on conscious effort by the user.
